Default Beating the rush....

When is the best time to apply for financial aid? I heard that mid summer is best because most people will procrastinate, meaning your paperwork will get through sooner than if you wait until August.

Does anyone know?

Lightbulb Applying for Financial Aid

It's probably best to apply for financial aid as soon as you send in your initial application- meaning get all of your financial aid information filled out early - the summer is a good time to get started on it.

The best time to apply for financial aid using the FAFSA is the earliest possible in January. If you mean financial aid through your school, it is still in January or early February, sometimes the deadlines are in early March. The sooner you apply is better for you; although the deadlines for schools vary but they are usually set for early in the year.

I'm guessing as soon as possible, but then again, I haven't even started yet.

I think you have it figured right. There are a lot of people who wait toil the last minute thinking they have plenty of time then live to regret that decision. Even if you do not necessarily beat the rush the sooner it is turned in the sooner it is processed.

I suppose housing might be another factor.

If dorms tend to fill up quickly, getting your paperwork and financial aid set up will keep you from looking for off campus, and probably more expensive, housing.
