A practical course for student writers

Ethical Use of AI in Student Writing

AI can help with parts of a writing process, but it can also start making the student’s choices for them. This course helps students think carefully about where that line falls—and how to keep authorship, judgment, and voice in their own hands.

Think clearly about the choices

Use tools thoughtfully. Keep the writing yours.

The course gives students a practical way to consider what AI is doing in a writing task, what information they are sharing, and what their school or program allows.

Support or substitution?

Consider when a tool may support a student’s process and when it begins to replace the student’s thinking, decisions, or expression.

Whose words and ideas?

Think about authorship and voice, and how to keep the student’s own meaning and point of view at the center of the work.

What should stay private?

Look at privacy and school policies so students can make informed choices about the tools they use and the material they share.

Discussion and guided practice

A changing technology calls for good judgment.

Rather than treating every tool or assignment as the same, the course helps students ask useful questions about purpose, authorship, privacy, and the rules that apply to their work. Workbook activities give students a way to apply those questions to writing choices.

Students do not need an AI account or tool to take part. The focus is on understanding choices and responsibilities, not on producing writing with AI.
